What you need to know before leaving
A Russian passport allows you to travel around the world, albeit with certain restrictions. Let's look at the most current requirements and conditions for travel:
- To enter the United States, you must obtain a visa. In 2025, an American visa is issued to Russians for 3 years and remains valid even after the expiration of the passport. Considering that the US embassy and consulates have suspended operations in Russia for ordinary tourists, Russians must apply for a visa at American diplomatic missions abroad. There are currently no direct flights from Russia to the United States.
- To visit Canada, you must obtain a visa, which can be a tourist, transit or temporary resident visa. A special feature of Canadian visas in 2025 is that they are always multiple ("multi").
- In May 2025, the European Union will introduce two new electronic entry control systems to the Schengen area: EES and ETIAS. The EES system will replace traditional stamps in passports with biometric registration, automatically recording data on entry, exit and duration of stay. To enter the EU, Russians will need a biometric passport (10 years).
- To visit Australia, you need to apply for an electronic Visitor Visa subclass 600, which is suitable for tourism, visiting relatives or short business trips. Visas are not pasted into the passport, but sent by e-mail.
- For most trips to China, Russians need a visa. There are exceptions. Visa-free entry is possible to Hainan Island for up to 30 days when traveling as part of a tourist group through an accredited agency, when traveling on cruise ships to Shanghai for up to 15 days, and when traveling as part of a tourist group to Guangdong Province from Hong Kong and Macau for up to 144 hours. There is also the possibility of visa-free transit through China: up to 72 hours through Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu.
