What you need to know before leaving

Danish citizens can visit 185 countries without a visa or with a visa on arrival, including countries in the European Economic Area and Switzerland, thanks to their EU citizenship status. In addition, it is important to consider the following before traveling to other countries.

• Danes can live not only in Denmark, but also in any EU country. There is no need to additionally apply for a residence permit or visa.
• Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not part of Schengen, so even Danes need a separate visa.
• In 2025, the Schengen area will introduce the Entry/Exit System (EES), which automatically records the dates of border crossings. This will eliminate manual stamping of passports.
• From January 8, 2025, Danish citizens will need an ETA to enter the United States.
• From April 2, 2025, Danes will need an ETA to enter the UK. The application is submitted through the app 48-72 hours before departure, the cost is 10 pounds.
