Where Austrian citizens can apply for eTA
The eTA is not a visa, but a travel authorization that is linked to the traveler’s passport. The eTA process usually takes only a few minutes, and once approved, the document is linked to your passport. 24 countries allow Austrians to enter with the eTA for up to 90 days.

What you need to know before leaving
Since May 2025, the new Entry/Exit System (EES) will automatically record the entry/exit dates of EU citizens, replacing the stamps in the passport. This will strengthen control over compliance with the 90/180-day stay limit in Schengen. For Austrians, the system simplifies transit, but requires updating data when changing a passport.
Citizens of 60+ countries, including Russia and Turkey, are required to obtain an ETIAS to enter Schengen since 2025. Austrians do not need permission.
Austrians encounter visa barriers in 35 countries. Special requirements are put forward by:
- China - a tourist visa is issued in 5-10 days, but an invitation or hotel reservation is required.
- Russia - guest and business visas are issued only with an official invitation.
- Saudi Arabia – 90-day eVisa with travel itinerary requirement. UK – ETA introduced in April 2025, valid for 2 years.
- Turkey – 24-hour visa-free transit at airports with a ticket to a third country
It is also worth remembering that Austria does not recognize dual citizenship. Upon receipt of a foreign passport, Austrian citizenship is automatically revoked.
