Life expectancy is a key index for evaluating any state, primarily because it is influenced by a vast array of factors. It is calculated annually based on statistical data collected by national institutes and international organizations. The UN Development Program uses a methodology that takes into account mortality data across different age groups to predict how many years on average a person born in a specific country will live.
Expected life expectancy is considered one of the key indicators of socio-demographic development. It reflects the effectiveness of medical care, living standards, hygiene standards, and the quality of a country's social policies. For example, high life expectancy rates are often associated with the development of medical technologies, accessibility of education, and a high level of social protection.

Top 10 countries with the highest life expectancy
In 2024, people live the longest in Monaco, where the average life expectancy reaches 85.9 years. Monaco, a small city-state on the Cote d'Azur, is a leader in access to quality medicine and a healthy lifestyle. There is a low crime rate and developed care for the older generation.
Hong Kong is in second place among centenarians, where people live to 85.5 years on average. This is also due to the high level of healthcare, advanced medical technologies and an emphasis on disease prevention. Modern research shows that the diet and lifestyle of Hong Kongers, including activity and low alcohol consumption, as well as an effective education system contribute to improving the health of the nation.
Macau ranks third in the ranking with an average age of 85.4 years. Macau, a small autonomous region of China, is known for its rapidly developing economic potential and high standard of living.
The top four includes as many as three Asian countries, and among them Japan. A country with an average life expectancy of 84.8 years cultivates a healthy lifestyle in its society, including a balanced diet, physical activity and constant medical examinations. In addition, research shows that a high degree of social connectivity and caring for loved ones also have a positive effect on life expectancy.
Australia ranks fifth (84.5 years old), followed by Switzerland (84 years old), Malta (83.8), South Korea (83.7), Liechtenstein (83.3) and Norway (83.2). All these countries place great emphasis on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. And if we compare this rating with the rating on the level of medicine, it turns out that the high quality of medicine in the country does not always fully determine longevity.
Top 10 countries with the lowest life expectancy
The least people live in Chad: today it is about 52.5 years for the average person. The main causes of early mortality include a lack of affordable health care, poverty, and chronic diseases such as malaria and HIV. Local conflicts and political instability also have a negative impact on living conditions. Lack of education and lack of resources for disease prevention exacerbate the situation, leading to high infant mortality.
Nigeria is in second place. People there also die at a young age, about 52.7 years old, when adult life is only in its prime on the European part of the Earth. Nigeria is facing serious health problems, including high levels of infectious diseases, a shortage of medical facilities and a low standard of living.
And Lesotho is in third place with an average life expectancy of 53.1 years. This indicator is also associated with high levels of HIV/AIDS and other infections, as well as a lack of medical services and poverty.
This is followed by the Central African Republic with a life expectancy of only 53.9 years. It suffers from constant armed conflict, poverty and disease. After the CAR are South Sudan (55), Somalia (55.3), Eswatini (57.1), Ivory Coast (58.6), Mali (58.9) and Guinea (58.9).
