Saint Lucia is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea, located north of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and south of Martinique. It is part of the Lesser Antilles and is unique for being the only country named after a woman – Saint Lucia of Syracuse.

The island spans 620 km² with a coastline of 158 km. Castries is the capital and largest city. Saint Lucia operates on UTC–4, and there is a 7-hour time difference between Saint Lucia and Moscow. It is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy with a bicameral legislature.

Climate Conditions

Saint Lucia has a tropical climate with average temperatures between 25°C and 27°C. Annual rainfall ranges from 1,300 mm on the coast to over 1,600 mm in the mountains. Hurricanes do occur but are less frequent compared to other nearby islands.

Summer in Saint Lucia is brief, hot, humid, and predominantly clear, while winter is longer, cooler, and marked by variable cloud cover. Average temperatures range from 3°C to 32°C, rarely falling below -2°C or rising above 36°C.

The hot season lasts from May to September, with average daytime temperatures around 28°C. August is the hottest month, with temperatures climbing to 31°C and falling to about 18°C. The cooler season lasts from November to March, with daytime temperatures averaging around 16°C. January is the coldest month, with temperatures ranging from 3°C to 12°C.

The rainy season lasts 8-9 months, from September to May, with November typically experiencing the highest rainfall. The average monthly rainfall during this period is 80-90 mm. The dry season runs from May to September, with the least rain in July. During the dry season, monthly rainfall is between 30 and 60 mm.

Demographics

As of the 2010 official census, Saint Lucia had a population of 165,595, with 50.36% female and 49.64% male. By the end of 2023, unofficial estimates suggest the population has grown to 189,440. The birth rate is 1.41 children per woman, and the population density is 292 people per square kilometer.

Despite high emigration rates, the population is still increasing at an average annual rate of 1.1%.

The population is predominantly of African descent (81%), with 11.9% of mixed heritage, 2.4% of Caribbean or Indian origin, and a small European minority. Children aged 0 to 14 account for 24.1% of the population, while those aged 65 and older comprise 8.6%. The average life expectancy is 73 years.

Around 70% of the population are Roman Catholics, influenced by French Catholic traditions. Approximately 19% are Protestants, and about 2% follow the Rastafarian movement.

English is the official language, but the use of Creole, which has a French lexical base, is growing. Approximately 75% of the population speaks Creole.

Economy

As of 2023, Saint Lucia's GDP is $2.51 billion, with a growth rate of 3.2% annually. The GDP per capita is $13,030. The country has a high unemployment rate, which was 17.1% in 2023.

The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, used by six countries in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. Inflation is relatively low, averaging around 2%.

Approximately 28% of the population lives in poverty, with 1% classified as extremely poor. Poverty is primarily a rural issue, with rates reaching up to 35% in some rural areas.

Tourism is a crucial economic driver, contributing 48% to GDP. The northern part of the island is the hub of tourist activity, boasting a range of luxury hotels and upscale attractions.

Agriculture is the island's second-largest revenue source. In the 1960s, bananas accounted for 80% of export income. In the 1990s, the government sought to diversify by promoting mango and avocado cultivation. Despite its historical importance, agriculture now contributes only 4% to GDP due to a significant reduction in arable land.

Saint Lucia's main exports include bananas and some textiles, primarily to the UK and the US. Given the island's geographic constraints, it imports most of its resources, with Brazil (41.7%), the US (21.4%), and Trinidad and Tobago (11.9%) being the primary suppliers.

With a 139 mobility index, Saint Lucian citizens can visit 93 countries visa-free for up to 180 days. They can obtain a visa on arrival in 40 countries (for stays of up to 120 days) and need to secure an electronic visa in 6 countries (for up to 90 days).
