The Safest Countries

The Global Peace Index reflects the level of safety in different countries. This ranking was developed by an international group of researchers from the Institute for Economics and Peace in collaboration with the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Sydney.

The Rating of Safe Countries in 2024

The Global Peace Index 2024 shows how safe residents and visitors feel in various countries around the world. The index considers overall levels of crime, perceptions of safety during daytime and nighttime strolls, concerns about robberies, car thefts, physical violence, and discrimination. The rating is based on data from the past 36 months, ensuring its relevance and accuracy. It takes into account not only internal but also external factors: a country's international relations, military expenditures, involvement in conflicts and combat operations, and other parameters.

The importance of this rating lies in its ability to provide a comparative analysis of safety levels in different countries and cities. While the data are based on user perceptions and may differ from official statistics, the Numbeo Safety Index serves as a valuable tool for assessing relative crime levels. It helps people make informed decisions about travel, living arrangements, and investments by providing crucial information about the crime situation in various places around the globe.

Where is the ideal place to live with children, so as not to worry about them and let them go for a walk alone? The countries of the top ten of the ranking may surprise you. The safest country in the world in 2024 is the dwarf European state of Andorra, it scored 87.1 points in the index of peacefulness. The UAE (United Arab Emirates) is in second place with 84.2 points: indeed, there is a very high level of law-abiding among citizens and severe penalties for crimes. And the third place is occupied by Qatar, another Arab country living under Sharia law (84 points in the index).

The fourth place is occupied by the Republic of China Taiwan (83.3 points), an island country where same–sex marriage is legalized and a capitalist economy is flourishing. This is followed by Oman (80.9), the Isle of Man (79.8), Armenia (78.4), Hong Kong (78.1), Japan (77.3) and Singapore (76.5).

It is very difficult to compile a real list of unsafe countries, because in many countries it is dangerous to conduct such studies and it is impossible to objectively assess the situation even approximately. For example, North Korea and many African states are not included in this index. Therefore, not all countries are included in the ranking, but only those for which the researchers managed to collect information. Venezuela is recognized as the most unsafe country in the ranking, having scored 18.7 points in the rating of peacefulness. Papua New Guinea is in second place with 20.3 points, followed by Afghanistan with 21.7 points in the peace index.

The top ten most insecure states include mainly countries where international or civil wars are currently in full swing, either the military that seized it is in power, or there is no effective legislation. For example, these are: Haiti (22.1 points), South Africa (24.6), Honduras (26.5), Trinidad and Tobago (29.2), Syria (30.8), Yemen (31.4) and Jamaica (32).
