Italy, officially the Italian Republic, is a country in Southern Europe. The capital and most populous city is Rome, while the economic and financial center is Milan. It is divided into 20 regions, with 5 of them being autonomous regions with special status. These regions, in turn, are subdivided into provinces or metropolitan cities.
Italy is located on the Apennine Peninsula, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. It shares land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, as well as with the microstates of Vatican City and San Marino, which are completely surrounded by Italian territory.
Italy is one of the initiators of European integration and one of the founding members of the European Union and the Council of Europe. The country is a member of the G7, G20, NATO, the United Nations (UN), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
