Internet Cost Ranking by Country

The ranking of internet costs in various countries shows significant differences, driven by economic, political, and infrastructure factors.

We have long been accustomed to having access to the internet anytime and anywhere. When the internet is unavailable, nearly all modern gadgets lose about 90% of their utility. The majority of digital nomads are representatives of remote professions, for whom the price, quality, and speed of the internet are of immense importance. The cost indicator has become a critical criterion in selecting a country for our users. Therefore, we consider this rating crucial for the GR service. It displays the average price of 1 GB of internet traffic in different countries worldwide. By referencing the figure for each country, we can understand the significant expenses we might face considering the required volume of consumed and transmitted data.

Unprecedented expensive Internet is used in Zimbabwe today — $43.75 for 1 GB. The high cost is due to economic instability, inflation and lack of infrastructure. Limited competition among providers and monopoly in some regions also lead to high tariffs. The Falkland Islands are in second place with a price of $40.58 per 1 GB. The cost of Internet there is high mainly due to geographical remoteness and low population density. And the third place, where it is most expensive to use the Internet — St. Helena Island with an average cost of $40.13 per GB.

Further down the ranking, the cost is almost halved, but still remains very high. In the fourth place is South Sudan ($23.70), where most providers are limited in resources for network development, which leads to significant costs. Then comes Tokelau ($17.24), Yemen ($15.68) and Turkmenistan ($11.42) with a state monopoly on communications services.

At the end, there are dozens of countries with the highest cost of 1 GB of Internet: the Central African Republic ($10.90), Svalbard and Jan Mayen ($9.00) and the Cayman Islands ($8.39)

All these territories are characterized by poor infrastructure and low competition in the communications market. Most of them also show political instability, civil and international conflicts.

The cheapest Internet in the world today is in Israel: it costs $0.02 per 1 GB, thanks to large investments in technology and developed infrastructure. High competition between providers leads to an improvement in the quality of services and lower prices, which makes Internet access as comfortable as possible for the population. Fiji takes the second place with a price of $0.09 per 1 GB of Internet due to the constant expansion of fiber-optic networks. And Italy closes the top three lucky leaders, where a gigabyte of Internet traffic costs only $ 0.09.

The fourth place of the rating is occupied by San Marino ($0.10). They're following him Pakistan ($0.12), Cambodia ($0.12), India ($0.16), Kyrgyzstan ($0.17) and Colombia ($0.20). All these countries are united by an average low cost of living, as well as high competition among operators. France closes the top ten countries with the cheapest Internet with a price of about $0.20 / 1GB. Despite the general high cost of living in the country, a wide variety of providers provides competitive prices for traffic.
