Romania is a state in southeastern Central Europe. It borders Ukraine to the north, the Republic of Moldova to the northeast, Serbia to the southwest, and Hungary to the west. The length of its state border is 3150 km. It is washed by the Black Sea to the east, with a coastline length of 225 km.
With an area of 238,397 square kilometers, Romania ranks 8th in terms of area and 6th in terms of population among all EU member states. The capital of Romania, Bucharest, is the eighth-largest city in the EU. The form of government is a semi-presidential republic.
Romania is a member of the United Nations, the European Union, the Schengen Area, NATO, the Council of Europe, the CEFTA, and the WTO.
The modern Romanian state was created in 1859 by the union of the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia into the Principality of Romania. After World War I, the Kingdom of Romania received Transylvania, Bukovina, and Banat from Austria-Hungary, Southern Dobruja from the Kingdom of Bulgaria, and Bessarabia from the Russian Empire. After World War II, Romania was part of the Warsaw Pact. Since 1989, Romania has politically aligned itself with Western European states and joined NATO (2004) and the European Union (2007).
