What you need to know before leaving

Citizens of Romania can move freely throughout all EU countries. There are no restrictions on the length of stay. This allows them to live, work and study in any EU country without obtaining special permits.

Since March 31, 2024, Romania has partially joined the Schengen area. Border controls upon entry and exit to other Schengen countries by air and sea have been abolished. However, checks remain at land borders.

Citizens of Romania enjoy the right to visa-free entry to the United Kingdom. They are allowed to stay in the country for up to 6 months per trip.

Since 2025, Romanians have the opportunity to visit the United States for up to 90 days without the need for a visa. To enter, you will only need to obtain an ESTA electronic permit, which is valid for 2 years.

Citizens of Romania require a visa to enter the Russian Federation. It is issued for a single or double trip, and the maximum period of stay in Russia is 30 days.
