What you need to know before leaving

The status of the French passport is supported by an extensive network of international agreements and the active diplomatic work of the French government. In addition to visa-free destinations, French citizens have access to simplified entry procedures using electronic travel authorizations (eTA) in 23 countries.

French citizenship gives the right to unlimited travel to all countries of the European Union, as well as to live and work in any chosen EU country. When crossing the borders of the Schengen countries, the passport must have been issued no more than 10 years ago and remain valid for at least 3 months after the date of departure.

In 2025, third-country nationals (non-EU members) will be required to register in the ETIAS system when visiting the Schengen area. However, this innovation does not directly affect the French. Among the special conditions for popular destinations, the following can be highlighted:

• The French can visit the United States without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), but are required to obtain an ESTA electronic authorization. The document is valid for 2 years and allows multiple trips with a stay of up to 90 days each.
• To visit Canada, French citizens must obtain an electronic authorization eTA. The document is valid for up to 5 years and requires proof of financial solvency.
• To travel to Australia, the French must obtain an electronic visa eVisitor. The document allows you to stay in the country for up to 90 days, valid for 1 year from the date of entry.

When visiting some African countries, such as Botswana, French citizens are granted the right to stay visa-free for 3 months. However, in most countries of the world, you must have proof of a return ticket and accommodation reservations for the entire period of stay.
