Since May 2025, registration in the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is required to enter the Schengen countries. This is not a visa, but a preliminary authorisation valid for 3 years. Similar systems exist for the UK (ETA) and Australia (eVisitor).
US citizens cannot enter 23 countries without a visa, including Russia, the DPRK, Iran and Syria. A 16-day electronic visa is required to visit the Russian Federation. A visa of category L (tourism) or M (business) is required to enter China, even for transit through the country.
Since 2024, Venezuela and Nicaragua have introduced mandatory accompaniment by a guide for American tourists throughout the country. The Central African Republic requires a permit from the Ministry of Defense and a military escort.
For entry into 93% of countries, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. Exceptions:
- Mexico and Canada: valid until the date of travel is sufficient.
- United Kingdom: 3 months beyond the intended departure date.
As of May 7, 2025, a REAL ID is required to board domestic flights to the United States. It requires proof of citizenship, address, and social security number. The EU and the United Kingdom have implemented pre-authorization systems (ETIAS and ETA), requiring Americans to provide biometric data and travel itinerary information.
