Serbia, officially the Republic of Serbia, is a country in the Western Balkans, Southeast Europe. The state borders Romania to the east and northeast, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Kosovo or Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Hungary. The capital is Belgrade.
It is the sole successor to the Republic of Yugoslavia, which dissolved in 2006. Serbia is a participant in the Black Sea Economic Cooperation and the Central European Free Trade Agreement. On December 22, 2009, Serbia applied for membership in the European Union, and on March 1, 2012, it was granted candidate status.
