Poland (officially the Republic of Poland) is located in Central Europe. Its area is 312,696 square kilometers, making it the 69th largest country in the world. The capital is Warsaw. The currency is the Polish złoty, and the official language is Polish. Poland was founded in 966 AD, coinciding with the adoption of Christianity by Mieszko I.
It shares borders with Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Czechia, and Germany. Its shores are washed by the Baltic Sea. Approximately 2/3 of its territory is occupied by the Polish Lowlands. To the north lie the Baltic Uplands, while to the south and southeast are the Lesser Poland and Lublin Uplands. The Carpathian and Sudeten Mountains run along the southern border. The highest point is Mount Rysy in the Tatra Mountains. Poland has a developed river system, with major rivers including the Vistula and Odra. There are numerous lakes in the north. About 28% of the territory is covered by forests. Unique national parks include the Białowieża, Babiogórski, and Tucholski forests.
Poland is a unitary state and a presidential-parliamentary republic. Its territory is divided into 16 voivodeships, which consist of powiats and gminas. Poland is a member of the Schengen Area, as well as the EU, UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, World Trade Organization, OECD, and Visegrád Group.
