World Population

The data for the ranking is collected and analyzed by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) on the basis of statistical data received from national institutions and international organizations, including census data, birth and death registration, as well as migration reports. The main focus is on the accuracy and completeness of the data, which allows us to give the most correct estimates of the population.

Demographic estimates are an important tool for analyzing global demographic trends. These figures reflect the distribution of the population by country and region. They help to understand which countries are facing overpopulation problems and which are facing demographic decline.

Regular data updates make it possible to track the dynamics of population change in different countries and predict it for the coming decades.

Top 10 countries with the largest population

India opens the first place in the ranking with a population of 1.4 billion people. According to the UN, in 2024 the total population of the Earth is 8.2 billion people. This means that more than 17% of all people on the planet now live in India. In second place is China, which is not very far from India: the difference in the population of the two countries is about 15.5 million. The top three are rounded out by the United States with a population of 326.7 million people, which is not even close to the two leaders.

Indonesia is in 4th place in terms of the number of inhabitants, with 267.7 million people, which is 59 million fewer than in the United States. Pakistan ranks 5th with 212.2 million inhabitants, followed by Nigeria (195.9 million), Brazil (209.5 million), Bangladesh (161.4 million) and Russia (145.4 million). The last country in the top ten in terms of population is Mexico, which is home to 126.2 million people in 2024.

Top 10 countries with the smallest population

The country with the smallest population in the world is the Vatican, with only 496 people living in it by 2024. It is not surprising, considering that it is also the smallest country in size: its area is only 0.44 km2. In second place is the small island of Niue in Oceania, with only 1,817 people living on it. The third place is occupied by another small island state – Tokelau, consisting of three islands. A little more than two thousand people live on it.

All other positions of the countries with the smallest population are occupied by the same island states. The fourth place from the end is occupied by the Falkland Islands with 3,477 inhabitants. Then there is the independent territory of Great Britain – the island of Montserrat, where 4,420 people live. The next most sparsely populated countries in the top ten are St. Helena (5.3 thousand people), Saint Pierre and Miquelon (5.7 thousand people), Tuvalu (9.8 thousand people), Saint Barthelemy (11 thousand people).
