Residence Permit of Switzerland

A residence permit in Switzerland is a special permit that allows you to reside in Switzerland legally. There are different ways to obtain residency. Depending on the type of residence permit, foreigners are allowed to live in the country indefinitely or only for a certain period of time. After obtaining such a permit residents have the right to visit Schengen countries without obtaining a visa, and can also apply for citizenship after 10 years of residence in the country. Types of Residence Permits

For visiting Switzerland, you can obtain various types of residence permits:

  • Schengen Visa C allows staying in the country for no more than 90 days within each 180-day period. The visa comes in different types – medical for receiving treatment in the country, educational for 90 days, business visa, or tourist visa.
  • National Visa D is issued if you need to visit the country for more than 90 days. It can be for extended medical treatment, for education, for family reunification, or for work purposes. The work visa falls under type D, which is processed if one intends to work in Switzerland.
