Changes in D visa requirements for Italy

Italian consulates have tightened the rules for obtaining category D visas. Now, to apply for this visa, you must provide a contract or invitation covering the entire period of its validity – 365 days. These new requirements complicate the visa application process for many applicants.

Rental conditions in Italy

Despite the stricter visa conditions, there are also positive aspects for those who plan to move to Italy. In Milan, landlords are ready to sign lease agreements online even without Italian documents, which can greatly simplify the procedure. Moreover, landlords are ready to provide certificates of housing suitability, but this will require a tax code (codice fiscale).

Preparation of documents

To successfully find a place to live and prepare for a D visa, it is recommended to collect the following documents:

  • a copy of the passport;
  • tax code (codice fiscale);
  • proof of solvency, such as employment contracts and bank statements translated into Italian;
  • documents confirming future employment and income plans in Italy.

Analysis and forecasts

Experts note that the stricter requirements are related to the need to control migration flows to Italy.

In past years, there have been cases where the lack of strict checks has caused difficulties with illegal migration and employment.

The opinions of experts indicate that the changes may contribute to more transparent and systematic procedures for their regulation.

It is worth considering that in addition to the D visa, Italy opened new horizons for remote workers in 2024 by launching the digital nomad visa program. For more information, see the article about Digital Nomad Visa in Italy.
