Indonesia is one of the most popular countries in Southeast Asia for tourists. The growth of tourist flow to Indonesia is facilitated by simple rules for issuing a visa on arrival, the possibility of extending it directly in the country, as well as the absence of restrictions on subsequent entries during the calendar year.
The procedure for obtaining visas to Indonesia differs from other countries. The functions of issuing them are performed not by the consular department of the Embassy, but by the Directorate General of Immigration under the Ministry of Justice of the country. An entry permit can be obtained by filling out an application on the website of the Directorate of Immigration of Indonesia evisa.imigrasi.go.id. It is important to note that this is the only way to apply for visas to the country.
Freelancer Visa
The opportunity to work remotely abroad on the basis of a Digital Nomad Digital Nomad visa is of interest to many foreigners. Its peculiarity is that the employee is considered a resident of his country, and taxes are paid according to the law. In Indonesia, from April 2024, an E33G type visa is valid for remote workers, issued for 1 year.
To receive it, you need to confirm an annual income in the amount of $60,000 in salary from a company registered outside Indonesia. A remote worker has no right to find a job in the country, engage in trade, or receive any income from Indonesian companies.
How much does a visa cost?
The visa fee in Indonesia varies significantly for different types of permits. Thus, the most sought–after and popular B1 guest (tourist) visa for 30 days becomes valid after payment of the fee - 500,000 IDR (Indonesian rupiah).
Single-entry 60-day Type C visas, extended up to 180 days, require payment in the amount of 2,000,000 IDR, type D for 1 year – 3,000,000 IDR. Exclusive E visas with the right to work with an annual validity period will cost $150+2,700,000 IDR.
Types of visas
In January 2024, a new Indonesian visa card was introduced, according to which it is possible to make a choice of a certain type of visa when applying through the website of the Immigration Department. Currently, all permits are divided into four groups, in each of which individual subtypes are indicated by an alphanumeric visa index:
- B – short-stay visitor visa (30 days). It can be received upon arrival.
- C is a single–entry 60-day visa with the possibility of extension up to six months.
- D – long-term permit for up to 5 years with multiple exit and entry.
- E – exclusive visas with the right to work, invest, and live.
Within each type, depending on the specific purpose of arrival, types of visas with a specific index are distinguished:
- B1 – tourism, visiting relatives and friends;
- B2 – business meetings, purchase of goods;
- B3 – medical visits;
- B4 – communication with government organizations.
Student's
To get an education in Indonesia, you need to apply for an E30 visa, E30B is a residence permit in the country for a long time, but limited by a certain condition. One of these conditions may be studying at a university or university, while a visa is issued for 12 or 24 months, subject to approval from the Ministry of Education of Indonesia.
The validity period of the student's passport must be 6 months longer than the validity period of the requested visa. The application for its receipt must be submitted no earlier than the confirmation of admission to the educational institution has been received.
Tourist
For tourism purposes, most visitors to Indonesia apply for a short-term B1 type visa, previously it was called e-VOA. You can submit an application on the website to receive it in advance and then you need to enter the country within 90 days, or you can do this upon arrival in Indonesia. An electronic visa is issued for 30 days with the possibility of its extension for the same period upon payment of another visa fee.
The peculiarity of visiting Indonesia is that for the purpose of tourism, you can get longer visas, for example, type C or D with the possibility of extension up to 5 years and the right to multiple exit and entry. At the same time, commercial and labor activities are prohibited, and the one-time period of stay in the country cannot exceed 180 days.
Business
For business trips to Indonesia, foreigners can use different types of visas, depending on the specific purpose and the required time for their implementation. Thus, the C2 visa (60-day) gives the right to carry out activities related to business, meetings or purchase of goods, negotiate and sign business contracts.
A foreigner has the right to conduct the same activity by obtaining a long-term D2 visa designed for 1, 2 years or 5 years with multiple visits. Short-term business trips for business purposes (B2) are also not considered a violation. However, all of these permits do not give the right to work under a contract, or to operate as a founder of the company.

Since 2024, only an E-type visa (formerly called KITAS) gives the right to work in Indonesia under an employment contract, a contract, invest in its economy, and implement projects in the field of production. With such a permit, you can bring family members with you to the country.
